I have told people before that even though I've lost my DNA test in my house, and I need to send it off, my bones feel like they're from Ghana. The same way when I stepped off the plane in New Orleans when I was 15 and I felt like I was home, I feel like that's how I feel when my feet hit the soil of my ancestors.
I've said before that the drums beat in our blood and the resiliency that helped our ancestors survive not only the trip but all of the hatred in this country for 400 years and counting is something that ties me to my roots.
Even though some of my cousins in the motherland may not know me, and they count me as other, I know that they still know that we are family. Regardless, the same Earth that birthed us, nurtured us, and the same Sun that gave my people their glow and the beautiful hues is where I will turn my face to the heavens and smile because I will be home.
